Why the roof, why now

A beloved building, in need of care.

The Hartland Music Hall was built in 1858 and remains a cornerstone of the Village of Hartland. Like any historic building, it needs regular, loving care. The Hartland Consolidated School (HCS) Foundation — established by John Robert Crouse, Sr. — owns the Hall, and the Cromaine Library leases the building from the Foundation.

Over the past year, the Foundation has drawn down its surplus to repair the Hall’s structural foundation and to help refurbish its pipe organ. This year, it’s the roof: the leaks have become regular, and they threaten everything beneath them.

These repairs have forced the Foundation to redirect grant dollars it has faithfully awarded to the community for years. That’s why the Hartland Area Project is running this roof-replacement campaign — so the grants can return, and the Hall can stay open.

“This structure was constructed in 1858 as the Hartland First Congregational Church. It was purchased in 1929 for $500 by the Hartland Consolidated School Foundation, established by John Robert Crouse, Sr. In 1932 the remodeled building became the Hartland Music Hall, dedicated to promoting a creative, social and educational environment for the then rural community. The hall has been used for music festivals, plays, weddings and, since 1933, the annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah.”
